A Small Example of Liberal Bias

Everyone has heard of Reverend Ted Haggard. Although many things should have made him a man of renown, such as being a former president of the National Association of Evangelicals, the former head pastor of church whose weekly attendance is counted in the tens of thousands, and a major conservative politico, it is for none of these that he has become somewhat of a household name.

The reason for his fame is the same reason that he has the word “former” placed before his credentials. Not too long ago he was caught in a drug-sex scandal, having smoked meth with a gay prostitute. The extent of the relationship is unknown; nevertheless he was justifiably disgraced and removed from his positions of power and religio-political authority. A big help to this was him being placed on the front page of just about every major newspaper in the country.

Now, a question is offered: who has heard of Charles Rust-Tierney? Probably next to no one. So what makes this name a name that should be as infamous as Ted Haggard? Well, let’s look at his credentials. Charles Rust-Tierney served as president of the Virginia chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for 12 years. With such an impressive run and being affiliated with a major legal and political organization, what made him step down? You guessed it, it was a major sex scandal. On September 8th of this year he was found guilty of downloading explicit child pornography and given seven years in prison.

This is very significant, especially since the transgression of Ted Haggard did not warrant prison time. But where was the media coverage, the front page articles, the photos, and the total invasion of privacy that was incurred upon Ted Haggard? Elusive to say the least. The Washington Post made only a slight reference in a small corner in the metro section of their September 8th paper and even the more conservative Washington Times buried it inside the paper, appearing without photos on page A6.

Here we have two sex scandals, two leaders of major organizations, and two different treatments by the media. The Conservative Christian gets the full treatment, whereas the Liberal Activist gets page A6 or no mention whatsoever. If the media was neutral, then both disgraced figures would have gotten either pushed under the rug or fully exposed. If the media was conservative, Ted Haggard would be an unknown and Charles Rust-Tierney would be synonymous with shameful repressed sexual arousal.

This is not the only telling proof that mass media in general is liberally biased; it’s just one I want to point out. Trust me; if I were to point them all out I would not have an article, but an encyclopedia.
