Indifferent Unto the Day
Indifferent unto the Day is the man who calls himself decent.
Who sees the greatest foe as his humanity
Who makes for himself a vast stronghold in his land
Fixing the ramparts, and laying the masonry
‘stablishing watchtowers, keep, quarters, guard well-mann’d.
This fabric of protection is not meant to inhibit enter
Rather for him to exit, the gravest of offence
The Transgression that is speaking out, echoing banter
Words of complaint, letters of dissent and conscience
Shamed is this good man, whose life is shut off from all.
He keeps the garrison fed and armed,
Thicker than flesh and mind is his e’ery wall
Damming himself as though a lake ne’er swarmed
It is he who sees his own good mind as wrong.
This benevolent being seeks closure, tacit, silence
With curfews set, patrols watching all along
He sleeps with comfort knowing he will not wince
And yet from beyond those walls of silence and self-degrading
There is a danger, an evil, whose menacing armies bombard the people.
Destroying their crops, violating their virtues,
Firing their barns and stays, looting their homes
They suspend their rights, ‘slaving their issues
Abolish their laws, their blood-spilling anarchy roams
What evils may come, it is they.
And yet with all the suffering, the cries for succor and mercy
With all the debaucheries and atrocities overwhelming
Let it not be forgot
that this
Good man, this decent man, kept the gates closed.
He doubled his guard, established his denial
And lived his life.
He stopped his ears, bit his tongue
Closed his eyes, turned away
Left the sight, let it be
And lived his life.
He went to bed, he got up
He ate his meals, he traveled to work
And he lived his life.
And thus he was, and always is, a good man a decent man. It is he who was consistent in his ambivalence, preferring it to paradise...
So when the storms of evils oncoming drove to his way
When they subjugated his people,
Tore down his walls and ramparts
Castrated his men, raped his women
Enslaved his children,
Burned his crops,
Rented his clothes and flags,
Oppressed the people of his land
And made the life he lived living Perdition
Let it resound that this great man did cry out to those around him.
For they too, are classified as decent.
