Global Warming does not exist

Many have been puzzled by why so many Evangelicals and Fundamentalists deny the existence of Global Warming. It’s not as though they are alone, as many nonreligious individuals and those of other religio-political sects such as Scientology and the LaRouche PAC deny the theory as well.

My preferred explanation is that this resistance originates from the fallout of the Evolution-Creation debate. For decades now the scientific establishment and conservative Protestant churches have been at odds with each other. After all this time of being skeptical over the circumstantial blasphemous case for Evolution, Evangelicals and Fundamentalists most likely see Global Warming as yet another circumstantial blasphemous theory.

The big difference is that Global Warming is not inherently anti-biblical. There is no dispute over origins or the validity of the Bible itself. Furthermore, unlike Evolution, many Conservative Evangelicals have endorsed the Global Warming thesis.

A lengthy statement on dealing with Global Warming and the dangerous ecological potential thereof was written up and endorsed by 86 major Evangelical leaders last year. Rick Warren, author of The Purpose-Driven Life, was one of the signers.

Duane Litfin, current president of the major evangelical academic institution Wheaton College, acknowledges things as well: "We have not paid as much attention to climate change as we should, and that's why I'm willing to step up…The evangelical community is quite capable of having some blind spots, and my take is this has fallen into that category."

Rev. Ted Haggard, former pastor of New Life Church in Colorado Springs and influential Evangelical leader, agrees with the efforts of the signers. As he said in an interview with the New York Times, "There is no doubt about it in my mind that climate change is happening, and there is no doubt about it that it would be wise for us to stop doing the foolish things we're doing that could potentially be causing this. In my mind there is no downside to being cautious."

Even some of the staunch critics of Global Warming who are of the “Religious Right” are acknowledging Global Warming as being far more valid than just another catastrophic scare tactic from Secularists. A good example is Rev. Pat Robertson, who in August of 2006 had this to say:

"And it is getting hotter, and the ice caps are melting, and there is a buildup of carbon dioxide in the air. And I think we really need to address the burning of fossil fuels. If we are contributing to the destruction of this planet, we need to do something about it.”

Lastly to note is the major outreach organ for Scientific Creationism in America, Answers in Genesis. Michael Oard, a scientist affiliated with AiG, wrote an article for their website that was critical of the Global Warming hype, but nevertheless he did recognize that “Practically all atmospheric scientists (the author included) agree that global warming has occurred. The raging debate is over how much of it is caused by man and whether global warming will be harmful.”

Really when it comes down to it, the debate over the existence of Global Warming is irrelevant. Everyone knows or should know that the measures implemented to halt climatic change of this type benefits the environment regardless. Unless some genuine danger of a theological, environmental, and/or political nature comes from fighting Global Warming, arguments over its validity are quite pointless, and contribute to our overabundance of hot air in discourse.
